Our Opinions: Ah, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. It's sometimes easy to forget how huge these half-ton trucks have gotten. Compared to a friend's now-ancient 1990s Ford F-150, this is a towering behemoth capable of crushing nearly anything in its path, while driving like a sedan from the 1970s.

That's the most surprising thing about the Chevy Silverado, Redline Edition or not -- it doesn't feel like you're driving a truck. Sure, you're sitting about as high as 1-ton rigs did years ago, but you have sedanlike responses to your inputs. The ride isn't jarring -- it's supple over bumps. The steering is light and feels relatively precise, at least compared to trucks of yore. The quad cab and full bed make for an interesting combination when navigating around a city, but it would be a big payoff for someone trying to vacation or go to a jobsite.

As we're seeing with trucks, the days of a truck being used as just a utility vehicle are long gone, and this Silverado is a prime example. The interior is comfortable, the seats don't hurt after long road trips, the Bose sound system is better than the hi-fi I have at home and the back seat is nearly big enough to sleep in: This is not your grandfather's truck.

That being said, there's still a pushrod V8 underneath this Silverado's hood. The 6.2-liter V8 isn't the same as the bruiser in your Camaro SS but instead doles out grunt and torque low in the rev range. Even with low-rpm performance the essence of this rig, it's more than fast enough to blast up interstate on-ramps and maybe do the occasional burnout -- a fitting end to tires mounted on wheels with racing stripes.

Options: 6.2-liter V8 Ecotec3 ($2,495); Redline Edition: Sport assist steps, front and rear black Bowties, spray-on bedliner, black belt moldings, 20-inch black painted aluminum wheels, all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, door and tailgate black emblems with red outline ($2,265); Power sunroof ($995); Enhanced driver alert package: front and rear park assist, active safety lane keep assist, low speed forward automatic braking, intellibeam headlamps, forward collision alert, safety alert seat ($945); LTZ Plus package: Power adjustable pedals, Bose audio system, heated steering wheel ($770); Heated and vented seats driver and front passenger ($650); Seats front pull feature, leather appointed buckets and center console, floor w/USB ports and wireless charging ($510); Audio system 8-inch diagonal, Colortouch w/Nav and MyLink ($495)
